ANZAC Day Dawn Service

Apr 05, 2018

Greenslopes Private Hospital is holding its traditional ANZAC Day Dawn Service at 5:30am on Wednesday 25 April 2018.

The hospital is honoured to be welcoming guest speaker David Dalziel - the son of Victoria Cross recipient Henry Dalziel who fought for our country during the First World War.

2018 not only marks the centenary of the end of World War I, but also the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Hamel, during which Henry Dalziel earned his Victoria Cross.

The community is invited to attend our Dawn Service, which will be followed by the Gunfire Breakfast.

Limited seating is available for those who are unable to stand during the service. If you are planning to attend and require seating or wheelchair access, could you please phone 07 3394 7111 prior to the day and ask to speak to the marketing team.

Representatives from the Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation (based at the hospital) will be attending. They may invite you to make a donation to support their life-changing medical research which aims to address major health issues impacting our current and former service personnel.

Our ANZAC Day Dawn Service and Gunfire Breakfast are made possible by hospital staff, volunteers, their family and friends, choir students and teachers from Somerville House, and cadets and teachers through Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie).

About Henry “Harry” Dalziel VC

During the action in northern France, Harry made a single-handed attack on a strong enemy machine-gun post. Under heavy enemy fire, he then raced across open ground collecting ammunition until he was severely injured. He was left with scars on his back, left leg and left arm, while a gunshot wound to his head caused a gaping hole above his left temple.

King George V presented the Victoria Cross medal to Harry Dalziel at Buckingham Palace in December 1918.

Harry Dalziel passed away at Greenslopes Hospital in 1965. In 2003, the Henry Dalziel VC Dialysis Centre was officially opened at Greenslopes Private Hospital, as part of a long-standing tradition of naming departments after war veterans.

David Dalziel has recently launched a website in honour of his father’s achievements: www.harrydalzielvc.org
