Inaugural "Lungs of Light"
Nov 10, 2017
Around three hundred solar lights will be arranged in the shape of a giant pair of lungs in a powerful display in Brisbane this weekend, as part of Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
Greenslopes Private Hospital nurse Jo Silva developed the “Lungs of Light” idea after her 45-year-old husband passed away at the hospital in May 2017 following a 6 year battle with the disease.
Jay Silva was a non-smoker who developed a rare form of lung cancer when he was just 39 years old. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 ALK+ lung cancer after experiencing only minor symptoms for about a year.
The Lung Foundation Australia will include Ms Silva’s inaugural “Lungs of Light” solar display in their Brisbane: Shine a Light on Lung Cancer community event, which takes place on Saturday 11 November from 4:30-8pm at Newcomb Park (529 Sumners Rd, Riverhills).
“My intention is that people are individually represented in the solar lights; each one is a dedication to a particular person. When someone makes a donation they can dedicate a light in memory of a loved one or in support of someone who’s currently affected,” said Ms Silva.
Brisbane: Shine a Light on Lung Cancer will begin with a 2.5km walk, which will take participants to revisit 7,000 trees planted alongside a permanent commemorative plaque in 2008. The planting of these trees represented the 7,000 people who died from lung cancer that year.
The walk will be followed by a nearby sausage sizzle and the “Lungs of Light” solar display at the Centenary Rowing Club, beside Newcomb Park.
