World Breastfeeding Week

Jul 31, 2017

Greenslopes Private Hospital’s maternity ward is embracing World Breastfeeding Week 2017 - Sustaining Breastfeeding Together – by sharing some top tips for parents.

Breastfeeding has been shown to have important health implications for both babies and mothers – but it can also require a team effort to make it work effectively.

Top tips:

  • Skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby can help
  • Breastfeeding soon after the baby is born
  • Feeding the baby as soon as she/he shows signs of hunger. (It can be normal for babies to breastfeed 8-12 times in 24 hours)
  • You may sometimes need to wake up the baby for feeds
  • It is easier to feed the baby when she/he is a little bit hungry rather than very hungry

Babies will let you know they are hungry by:

  • Sticking their tongue in/out
  • Turning their head to the side with their mouth open
  • Putting their hands to/near their mouth

During your stay at Greenslopes, the midwives can help you with breastfeeding advice. You can meet Judy, our Lactation Consultant, and learn more about:

  • Feeding cues (how your baby lets you know they are hungry)
  • Positioning and latching onto the breast
  • Breast changes in the first week after birth
  • How to know your baby is getting enough breast milk
  • Expressing breast milk
  • Support when you go home

At Greenslopes Maternity, we are committed to supporting women with their feeding choices.
