Anaesthetics & Pain Management
The Anaesthetic Unit provides a full range of anaesthetic services for Greenslopes Private Hospital 24 hours a day. The Unit also provides a Multidisciplinary Pain Clinic, which meets the criteria specified by the International Society for the Study of Pain. With a multidisciplinary approach to pain management, Greenslopes Private Hospital Pain Clinic is staffed by a large team of healthcare providers including; anaesthetists, psychiatrists, pain specialists, registered nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, physiotherapists and social workers.
Cardiology
Greenslopes Private Hospital offers cardiac patients one of the most progressive and comprehensive cardiology services in the country.
Cardiac Catheter Laboratory
A state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheter Laboratory, featuring the most sophisticated automated digital medical imaging equipment was opened in 1997. The Laboratory can perform the very latest tests and procedures in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Angioplasty and stenting are also undertaken in the Laboratory.
Coronary Care Unit
A new Coronary Care Unit was opened at the Hospital in August 1998. The inclusion of a dedicated CCU located conveniently nearby Greenslopes' cardiac services allows for the complete management of all acute cardiac emergencies including heart attacks, angioplasty and pacemaker procedures, rhythm monitoring and full haemodynamic pressure monitoring.
Cardiac Rehabilitation
To make the adjustment to a healthier lifestyle easier, Greenslopes Private Hospital has developed a simple, but effective Cardiac Rehabilitation Program for inpatients, outpatients and their families.
Hearts 1st
Cardiologists in the Hearts 1st Clinic perform the very latest non-invasive diagnostic cardiac tests available including ECG, Echocardiography, Exercise ECG, Stress Echo, Dobutamine Stress Echo, Transoesophageal Echo, Holter Monitoring and Signal Averaged ECG.
The Clinic is operated by some of the State's finest cardiologists who are strongly committed to providing outstanding service to patients by offering same day access and results to a wide range of diagnostic tests. The Clinic is open Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 5.30pm. A referral is required.
Cardio-thoracic Surgery
The Cardio-thoracic Surgery Unit performs all facets of thoracic surgical procedures including diagnostic investigations such as bronchoscopy, mediastinoscopy and video assisted procedures. All lung resection and oesophageal surgery is performed on-site.
The introduction of cardiac surgery to Greenslopes Private Hospital in July 1998, was the final step in establishing high quality, comprehensive services for patients with cardiac disease. Coronary artery bypass grafting, valve surgery and minimally invasive surgery are all performed in a dedicated theatre by experienced cardiac surgeons.
Dermatology
The extensive range of services performed by the Dermatology Clinic include Laser Therapy, Phototherapy, patch testing, cutaneous biopsy and management of some skin tumours/lesions. Dermatological surgery and Moh's surgery are also undertaken in the Day Surgery Unit.
Skin and Cancer Foundation
A Skin and Cancer Foundation has been established by the Greenslopes Private Hospital Dermatologists and they have a keen interest in research.
Ear, Nose & Throat (including Audiology)
The ENT Department at Greenslopes Private Hospital has a multi-disciplinary approach to patient management and liaises with the Speech Pathology, Audiology, Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Oral Surgery Departments. A wide range of ENT surgery can be performed at the Hospital.
Audiology Department
The following services are available in the Audiology Department: basic audiometric testing; calculation of percentage loss of hearing; neuroaudiological assessments; auditory brainstem responses and electronystagmography and caloric testing.
EMERGENCY CENTRE
Well-equipped with life-saving technology, the Greenslopes Emergency Centre is one of the largest emergency centres in Brisbane. A team of experienced, highly trained doctors and nurses are available for emergency patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Centre is particularly noted for its expertise in handling cardiac patients, strokes, sports injuries, acute surgical emergencies and eye injuries.
With no city traffic hassles, the Emergency Centre is easily reached from either Logan Road or the South-East Freeway and parking is available right outside the door.
Emergency Centre services and facilities include resuscitation and diagnostic equipment fro all emergencies, an x-ray room, fully monitored cardiac bays, plaster and suture facilities, an ophthalmology room especially equipped for eye emergencies and a large, comfortable reception area.
Endocrinology
The Greenslopes Private Hospital Endocrinology Unit is of exceptional quality providing a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient clinical service in all aspects of endocrinology. The doctors attached to this Unit are highly trained and have international reputations in their specific fields.
The Endocrinology Unit has particular experience and expertise in the areas of pituitary and adrenal disease, thyroid disease, calcium and bone disease, obesity and male impotence. The important research conducted by this Unit has consistently attracted funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council since 1993.
Gastroenterology
The Gastroenterology Unit at Greenslopes Private Hospital is a modern, fully equipped facility. The Unit incorporates five consulting rooms, three procedure rooms, an admission area and a recovery unit. there is a Gastroenterologist in attendance daily Monday to Friday with a Gastroenterologist and staff on-call 24 hours a day.
The full range of endoscopic services are available including: upper GI, endoscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP and related interventions, endoscopic laser palliation of cancer, Percentaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube insertion, insertion of oesophageal prostheses for palliation of oesophageal cancer, liver biopsy etc.
General Medicine
There are four General Medical Units, three of which are affiliated to subspecialties. These Units have been accredited by the Royal Australian College of Physicians for Core Basic Training. Physicians conduct outpatient clinics for entitled veterans.
Three of the Units form part of the Acute Stroke Unit jointly run with the neurologists.
General Surgery
The General Surgery Unit covers all aspects of general surgery including upper gastro-intestinal, pancreaticobiliary, colorectal and endocrine surgery.
The operating theatres at Greenslopes Private Hospital enjoy an enviable reputation with state-of-the-art theatres equipped with the latest technology. The Hospital made medical history in 1997 when it became the first in the country to use AESOP, a voice activated surgical robot. Our operating theatres incorporate brand new anaesthetic monitoring technology and employ the highest infection control standards with all instrumentation cleaned and sterilised in a central sterilising department.
Geriatric Medicine & Rehabilitation
The Rehabilitation Unit, opened in March 1997, has 40 inpatient beds in comfortable surrounds. It is primarily for entitled veterans and war widows although occasional private patients are admitted for continuing care. Operating under a multidisciplinary team approach, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and social work all have major input into the treatment and ongoing management of patients.
The Rehabilitation Day Hospital offers individualised programs for patients. It also serves as a venue for the Hospitals' Parkinsons and Respiratory Rehabilitation Programs.
Gynaecology
The Gynaecology Unit was established in February 1996. It provides a general gynaecology service with a special interest in "prolapse". There is also a service in Gynaecological Oncology.
Haematology / Oncology
This Clinical Group incorporates the disciplines of clinical haematology, oncology and radiotherapy, and investigates and treats patients with blood diseases or malignancy. The Hospital has extensive on-site investigation facilities available through Queensland X-Ray and Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology. The Unit works in close cooperation with the surgical units of the Hospital in providing multidisciplinary care to oncology patients. Combined chemoradiotherapy services are provided in association with the visiting radiotherapy consultants of the Unit. Allied health services are available if required.
Day case and inpatient investigation is available, with the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic haematological disorders and most solid tumour malignancies. Coagulation problems are covered. The newly redeveloped day care area provides plasmapheresis and leucopheresis services as well as chemotherapy and blood product support. Autologous marrow transplant services are available. Experienced staff provide intensive inpatient care.
Hypertension
The Hypertension Unit is world-renowned for its pioneering work in the diagnosis and treatment of adrenal-related hypertension. This Unit is led by Professor Richard Gordon, internationally acclaimed for his work in high blood pressure caused by adrenal gland malfunction, particularly, "primary aldosteronism". This condition is the commonest curable form of hypertension. Hypertension can lead to kidney failure, heart attack and stroke and is the cause of death of many thousands of Australians each year.
Professor Gordon advocates screening for adrenal causes in all hypertensive patients and subsequent surgery if an adrenal cause is identified.
The Greenslopes' surgical and research teams have attracted significant attention in this area and have been invited to present their findings at international medical and surgical conferences.
Queensland Hypertension Association
The Queensland Hypertension Association was formed by patients of the Hypertension Unit at Greenslopes Private Hospital. It conducts regular educational meetings in the Hospital and is open to the public.
Infectious Diseases
There are two infectious diseases physicians appointed to Greenslopes Private Hospital. They assist in the multidisciplinary management of patients with infections.
Intensive Care Unit
The 13 bed Intensive Care Unit provides specialised care for patients who require constant monitoring, intensive nursing care and complex respiratory support. This Unit is capable of providing the full range of tertiary intensive care services and is recognised by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists as suitable for training.
Nephrology
A dedicated Greenslopes' Nephrology Unit was established in 1998. This Unit has a chronic haemodialysis and CAPD program and provides acute dialysis support for ICU. A clinical nephrology service is provided with inpatient and outpatient management and consultations.
Neurology & Clinical Neurophysiology
The Neurology Unit consists of inpatient and outpatient services including Clinical Neurophysiology. The Unit also forms part of the Acute Stroke Unit which is jointly conducted with general physicians. The Neurology Unit is actively involved in research in the areas of cerebrovascular disease, Parkinson's Disease and Diabetic Neuropathy. The Stroke Unit at Greenslopes has a number of advantages namely: immediate access to the investigative and support facilities required for seriously ill stroke patients; continuity of care by therapy staff allocated to wards and a multidisciplinary team approach to stroke managment.
Neurologists, neuro-psychologists, general physicians with particular expertise in stroke and allied health staff form the "stroke team".
Neurosurgery
The Neurosurgical Unit currently undertakes extracranial and intracranial work.
Ophthalmology
The long-established Greenslopes Eye Unit provides general ophthalmological services as well as specialised clinics in glaucoma, oculoplastics, retina and low vision. The Unit has over 20 visiting specialists as well as orthoptists, specialised nursing and secretarial staff, to deal with the large volume of medical and surgical patients. The Unit has an active operating commitment to both day patient surgery and inpatients.
Oral Surgery
The Oral Surgery Unit provides an inpatient and consultation service as required.
Orthopaedics
The Orthopaedic Unit at Greenslopes Private Hospital is a general orthopaedic unit with a strong emphasis on elective surgery of the hip, knee, foot, hand and shoulder. The Unit has a strong focus on education and training and has an accredited orthopaedic registrar who assists with patient care.
Pathology
Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology has been a major provider of quality pathology services in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales for more than forty years. The partnership consists of tweny two partner Pathologists who provide total management direction and control. Dr Michael Robinson is Director of Pathology at Greenslopes Private Hospital. He is supported by nominated senior specialists in each division of pathology. The pathologists contribute significantly to the teaching role of the Hospital and also participate in Hospital committees.
A range of procedural tests are available at the S&N licensed collection and procedural centre (bookings essential) by contacting (07) 3394 7721. This centre is open to members of the general public between the hours of 7.45am - 5pm, Monday to Friday. Off street parking and wheelchair access is available. The laboratory offers a 24 hour a day service. Patients from a vast geographic area may have pathology tests performed locally and results will be collated and available at Greenslopes Private Hospital.
Plastic Surgery
The Plastic Surgery Unit at Greenslopes Private Hospital provides a broadly based plastic surgery service. Patients referred to this Unit include patients with skin and other malignancy requiring reconstruction; head and neck malignancy, and traumatic, ishaemic or congenital skin defects.
Patients with head and neck malignancy are treated in conjunction with the Head and Neck clinic of the Queensland Radium Institute at Royal Brisbane Hospital.
Psychiatry & Mental Health
The 30 bed Keith Payne Unit, opened in 1996, was named in honour of Australia's only surviving Vietnam Victoria Cross recipient. The Unit has long been one of the State's leading centres for the care and treatment of veterans and war widows suffering from psychiatric disorders such as drug and alcohol problems and post traumatic stress disorder.
The Keith Payne Unit developed one of the first and finest treatment programs in Australia for veterans suffering from war-related post traumatic stress disorder.

Radiology
Located within the Hospital, Queensland X-Ray provides a highly sophisticated service to inpatients and outpatients of Greenslopes Private Hospital. These services include CT scanning, angiographic interventional techniques, nuclear medicine studies, ultrasound and mammography.
The radiology facility, staffed by two full-time radiologists, offers the highest standards of medical imaging appropriate to a major teaching hospital while maintaining the level of service expected of a private radiology practice.
Queensland X-Ray prides itself on providing the highest quality diagnostic imaging in a comfortable, safe, caring environment. As Queensland's largest radiology partnership, they have over 30 practices statewide.
Respiratory Medicine
The Respiratory Medicine Unit provides an inpatient as well as outpatient service for patients with chronic airway disease, lung cancer and other respiratory conditions.
Lung Function Laboratory
The Greenslopes Lung Function Laboratory is a clinical measurement laboratory ancillary to the Chest Clinic Department of Greenslopes Private Hospital. As a clinical measurement laboratory it provides a number of lung function tests.
Rheumatology
The Rheumatology Unit provides an inpatient as well as outpatient service. The Unit functions in close liaison with occupational therapy, physiotherapy and the Orthopaedic Unit.
Urology Unit
The Urology Unit is a very active unit, providing inpatient, outpatient, operating and consultative services in all aspects of urology. Because of its casemix, it has extensive experience in all prostatic diseases. Urodynamic services are available.
Vascular Surgery
The Vascular Surgery Unit at Greenslopes Private Hospital has been established for more than 10 years. The Unit provides a comprehensive peripheral vascular surgical service to entitled veterans and to private patients based at Greenslopes Private Hospital. Major aortic surgery and lower limb bypass grafting are commonly performed by our experienced vascular surgeons.
