Greenslopes Hospital Pharmacy's goal is to provide the best care for patients by delivering an efficient, integrated and cost-effective pharmacy service. Since medication is a vital part of many procedures and medical treatments provided by the hospital, the logistics of medication supply is paramount.

Our clinical pharmacists ensure patients understand how to use their medications correctly. This is especially important for; our patients who are being discharged with new or changed medications; or patients whose visit to one of the hospital outpatient clinics, has resulted in a prescribed medication as part of their therapy.

Participating in clinical trials and projects provides our pharmacy with opportunities to explore and embrace new horizons in healthcare. Pioneering new services has allowed us to introduce specialised counselling services such as our intercavernosal self-injection training for males with impotence. Our alliance with Australian Pharmaceutical Healthcare Systems Pty Ltd has allowed us to streamline the services our pharmacy offers.

The management and staff of Greenslopes Hospital Pharmacy have a strong commitment to continuous quality improvement. The pharmacy is accredited by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards and we work hard to monitor our services and create improvements in whatever way we can. This requires our staff to be well trained and professional in their approach.

We are proud to be associated with Greenslopes Private Hospital and welcome the opportunities that our association brings.

Radiology

Located within the Hospital, Queensland X-Ray provides a highly sophisticated service to inpatients and outpatients of Greenslopes Private Hospital. These services include CT scanning, angiographic interventional techniques, nuclear medicine studies, ultrasound and mammography.

The radiology facility, staffed by two full-time radiologists, offers the highest standards of medical imaging appropriate to a major teaching hospital while maintaining the level of service expected of a private radiology practice.

SPECIAL VETERAN'S SERVICES

Due to the special relationship between Ramsay Health Care and the Department of Veterans' Affairs, a number of unique multidisciplinary services have been developed at Greenslopes Private Hospital to cater for the special needs of entitled veterans and war widows. Such services include the Keith Payne Psychiatric Unit, the Geriatric Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit and the Stroke Unit.

In addition, there are a number of designated services specifically for veterans including: diabetic clinic, glaucoma clinic, cancer care and education programs, lymphoedema management and back management, respiratory rehabilitation, speech pathology and stomal therapy.

THE FLORENCE SYER UNIT

The Florence Syer Unit is a 30 bed Sub-acute Unit accommodated in one of the last remaining wards of the former Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital, which has been renovated for this special purpose.

The Unit is intended for patients who are past the acute stage of their illness, but are not ready to go home; are awaiting hostel or nursing home placement; or have not the access to social support or carers. These patients will be admitted to the Sub-acute Unit to continue their convalescence until such time as they are ready to return home or to be discharged to a nursing home or hostel. The Sub-acute Unit will assist the Hospital to overcome the traditional winter problem of acute beds being unavailable for those in need.

The new building features: 30 beds; air conditioning; bedside telephones, radios, televisions and nurse call buzzers; doctors' consulting room; nurses station and reception; patients' lounge; verandah with comfortable seating; surrounding landscaped gardens.

Connected by a covered walkway to the First Floor of the Surgical Services Wing, the Unit's new location allows for good access to the Hospital's wide range of actue care and support services, and is close to visitors car parking.

SLEEP STUDY UNIT

A new Sleep Study Unit was opened at Greenslopes Private Hospital in March 2001 under the direction of three Greenslopes Respiratory Physicians, Drs Chris Schull, Allan Finnimore and Robyn O'Sullivan.

The Unit, which incorporates a high standard of equipment, consulting rooms and a sleep laboratory, provides a comfortable environment for the assessment of a wide variety of sleep disorders that affect the population, including Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

It is estimated that approximately 12 percent of chronic snorers have the potentially serious medical disorder, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, but many are not aware that they have a problem.

The condition affects four percent of the adult population and can lead to lack of concentration, poor memory and excessive daytime sleepiness. Over time, it can cause serious damage to the heart and brain.

The new Unit will not only assess sleep apnoea but all disorders which contribute to sleepiness through the day, including narcolepsy.

Senior scientists who are fully trained in the investigation of sleep disorders are based on-site in the Unit.
Patients requiring investigation of sleep conditions can be referred by their general practitioner to the Sleep Study Unit via a physician at the Chest Clinic at Greenslopes or directly to Drs O'Sullivan, Schull and Finnimore.
