GPHnews 11 “Paediatric Problem Solvers” GP Education Wednesday 20 May Paediatric Problem Solvers On Wednesday evening 20 May our three new paediatricians from Paeds in a Pod presented a GP Education program for local GPs. Topics were diverse Common presentations to General Practice – treat or refer with Dr Megan Yap, Sleep problems related to behavioural paediatrics with Dr Emma-Jane Roper and Newborn assessments with Dr Linda Mellick. The evening concluded with the panel of paediatricians facilitated by Dr Sue Gray responding to pre-submitted questions from the attendees, and some questions taken from the floor. The GPs in attendance responded very positively to all in the information shared this evening. Key take home messages included • Importance of melatonin with regulating sleep patterns (can be used from 2yrs old) / good sleep hygiene / taking a good history of the patient to assess their sleep patterns • Refer to paediatrician if child looks unwell and has a fever >38° (refer unimmunised children early) • Renal ultrasound for recurrent UTI, no micturating cysto-urethrogram (MCU) unless abnormal ultrasound • Inguinal hernia – refer ASAP • Pyrexia Unknown Origin (PUO) refer immediately if under 2/12 age, even if well looking infants / can have life threatening infection • Newborn assessments – top to toes, systemic approach Introducing our new Paediatricians Dr Linda Mellick provides a broad range of paediatric services including developmental issues and complex medical issues. She has at least two years of experience in neonatology and loves working in this area. Linda also has experience in neurology and metabolic medicine, as well as a year of experience at the Child Development Unit in Keperra and in the area of child safety. Linda sees the benefit of a multidisciplinary environment, like Greenslopes Paediatrics, in providing a holistic model of care to address the needs of children in the context of the family unit. She refers when appropriate and is comfortable liaising with allied health, schools and other specialists in order to maximise the care of each child. Teaching medical students, continuing her own professional education and working closely with colleagues are insightful and rewarding responsibilities to Linda. She has worked at the Royal Children’s Hospital for at least six years and has also worked at the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital, Prince Charles Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Ipswich and Mackay Hospitals. Prior to earning her Bachelor of Medicine/ Bachelor of Surgery through University of Queensland, Linda obtained a Bachelor of Laws and Science. Dr Megan Yap was awarded her Fellowship to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Paediatrics) in 2014. She offers general paediatric medical services for children under 16 years of age. Her special interest is in developmental paediatrics and infant development. Paediatrics became an obvious choice for Megan during her training when she found a lot of joy in helping and supporting children and families with complex medical needs or developmental issues. She is personally rewarded by helping children to reach their full potential and enjoys interacting with children and families to provide caring paediatric services. Megan’s experience includes work at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane and advanced training at Brisbane’s Mater Children’s, Royal Children’s and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospitals. She also spent six months as a senior House Officer at Temple Street Children’s University Hospital in Dublin. Prior to obtaining her Bachelor of Medicine through University of Queensland, Megan worked as a qualified pharmacist. Dr Emma-Jane Roper graduated from the University of Liverpool, England in 2003, before emigrating to Australia in 2004. She completed her Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in General Paediatrics in 2013, working primarily at the Mater Children’s Hospital, as well as Nambour and Gympie Hospitals. Dr Roper has worked as the senior registrar in child protection at the Mater Children’s Hospital from 2010 to 2013. She is interested in all aspects of general paediatrics, and has a particular interest in early childhood behaviour and developmental concerns.
