Dynamic duo: just what the patient ordered In this edition of GPH News, we are shining a light on a dynamic duo from the Cyril Gilbert Cancer Centre. Catering attendants Cathy Senczak and Mel Nielsen have the admirable ability of remembering not only the patients’ names (and those of their relatives), but also their beverage and snack preferences! Nurse Unit Manager Michelle Beutel said, “They are the hidden gems in CGCC and get so many compliments for their kindness, caring nature, and their flexibility to meet patients’ dietary needs. Nothing is ever too much trouble!” The pair are regularly found in the kitchen preparing cappuccinos, iced chocolates, juices, biscuits and cakes for those receiving treatment. “We see the best in people who have the worst diagnoses,” said 10 | GPH News – April 2017 Ms Senczak. “They are such happy and grateful people.” Ms Nielsen agrees, “It’s a bit of an honour for us. It feels like we’re making a difference. We also receive help from volunteers – we’d be lost without them.” Ms Senczak has been working in Cyril Gilbert Cancer Centre since it opened in 2009, while Ms Nielsen joined the team five years ago. “One patient describes CGCC as the Greenslopes Day Spa – with the catering team being a big part of that as they look after her so well,” said Ms Beutel. The catering attendants said they love their jobs and the team environment in the Cyril Gilbert Cancer Centre. “I’ll be here until I retire!” said Ms Senczak. ...the rally was intended to be both emotionally and physically challenging, to signify a cancer journey...
