A Queensland police dog handler with a dogged determination to fight prostate cancer is helping Greenslopes Private Hospital to raise awareness about the terrible disease. Senior Constable Steve Lindsey said his story started 26 years ago when his father died from prostate cancer. “As a young man, losing my father was devastating to me and I knew from that experience that I would be at a greater risk myself of developing this cancer… and began screening at the age of 40,” said Mr Lindsey. In January this year, the policeman was supporting a mate who had just been diagnosed with prostate cancer. His friend’s urologist said a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test alone was not enough for effective screening; a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) was also necessary. “With no symptoms and a recent PSA test behind me, I went off to see a urologist and to my horror, my worst fears began to materialise,” said Mr Lindsey.
