GPH News Spring 2013

Greenslopes has a tradition in teaching going back over 42 years... ...Greenslopes ENT/ Head and Neck surgeons becoming the first in Queensland... GPHnews 3 A word from the CEO Much has happened here at Greenslopes Private Hospital (GPH) since our last edition of GPH News and I’d like to take this opportunity to share some of these goings on with you. Firstly, I’d like to start with congratulating our very own Professor Darrell Crawford who has been appointed Head of the School of Medicine at the University of Queensland. Prof Crawford has very strong links to the hospital as a Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) as well as being Director of Research at our Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation and previously as Head of UQ’s GPH Clinical School. And whilst on the achievements of our VMOs, Dr Kellee Slater became a published author in August, with the launch of her new book How to Do a Liver Transplant. The book is an eye-opening series of stories from Dr Slater’s surgical career and a fantastic read. If you are interested to grab yourself a copy just go online and Google the book title. I’m very pleased to report that our new maternity service is going very well with nearly 400 babies delivered and we are on track to deliver over 600 GPH bubs in the first 12 months of this new service. Importantly, the feedback we have been receiving from all of our ‘GPH mums’ has been really very wonderful. The new maternity service is as you may be aware part of a much larger $47M development we finished in March this year. This development also provided us with several new wards and two more operating theatres. Consequently, we have also had several new VMOs join us at GPH (see page 10 for details). In regard to research at GPH, our Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation has recently announced a new research project into the genetic links to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder under the direction of Associate Professor Bruce Lawford. This research project is already attracting significant interest and we look forward to its findings playing a major role in PTSD treatment in the future. Refer to page nine for more info on this research and the GMRF. This year has been another great year of GP Education at Greenslopes. At our latest event, GPs were able to take advantage of learning from our team of emergency physicians and nurses in our onsite Simulation Centre. Greenslopes has a tradition in teaching going back over 42 years and it’s wonderful to be able to continue that legacy through so many different forums. We certainly appreciate the support of GPs who attend and make our GP Education events so successful. If you haven’t had the chance to attend one of our events before, please do keep an eye out for the future events as I am sure you will really enjoy and take away a lot from any event you attend. Finally, I’m pleased to also announce another GPH first with Greenslopes ENT/ Head and Neck surgeons becoming the first in Queensland to perform transoral robotic surgery. This is a new minimally invasive approach that provides an alternative to what can be highly invasive surgery and high dose chemoradiation therapy for the diseases of the head and neck. It’s great that we at GPH are able to offer our patients the very latest in minimally invasive treatments. Best wishes, Mark Page Chief Executive Officer ...almost 400 babies delivered and we are on track to deliver over 600 GPH Bubs... ...in the first 12 months of this new service. to perform transoral robotic surgery.
