With the goal of helping children with cranio-facial deformities, Assoc Prof Lewandowski founded Operation Smile Australia, a not-for-profit organisation that sends Australian and New Zealand based volunteers to developing nations on cleft lip, palate and craniofacial missions, as well as bringing children to Brisbane for treatment. The students have benefited from Dr Skinner’s wealth of knowledge and Dr Skinner was previously nominated by the students and received the Lynn D Walters Excellence in Teaching in Internal Medicine Award. A UQ award has also been established in recognition of Dr Skinner’s long term voluntary teaching contribution at the Greenslopes Clinical School, named “The Dr Mark Skinner Award for Academic Excellence”.
