The Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) of the Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation has been awarded the prestigious Best Site 2014 by ARCS Australia Ltd. April Josephsen was delighted to accept the award on behalf of all the CTU team at the ARCS Scientific Congress in Sydney. Miriam Dwyer (CEO, GMRF) said: “We would also like to share this award with the following people who we work closely with every day: the team at the Cyril Gilbert Cancer Centre, GPH Pharmacy, APHS, QLD X-Ray, Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, and the doctors’ receptionists who help with appointment scheduling. Qld Senior Australian of the Year Award Finalist Our very own Joan Harris, President of the Diggers Dozen volunteers was recently a finalist in the QLD Senior Australian of the Year Awards. Joan was in great company on the list of nominees in her category, which included Clive Berghofer AM, Jean Little OAM, and Fred Hyde AM, who was announced as the category winner at a special luncheon in Brisbane on Friday 24 October 2014. Whilst Joan did not win her category we are very proud of her and the Diggers Dozen volunteers for all that they do for our hospital community. For those of you who might not know, the Diggers’ Dozen have raised over $200,000 for the work of the Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation (GMRF) based here in GPH – a huge achievement for a volunteer group. At the GMRF Supporter High Tea in 2013, Joan pledged that they will bring this total to $250,000 by the ANZAC centenary in 2015. In addition, the group undertakes a variety of other very valuable volunteer tasks here in our hospital. In September, Chris McNamara was appointed to the position of Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse Chris McNamara for Greenslopes Private Hospital. This position is Prostate Cancer Specialist part of The Prostate Cancer Specialist Nursing Nurse Program which was established to meet the needs of men living with prostate cancer. This is the first of its type in Australia, coordinated through the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). The Prostate Cancer Nurse will offer specialist nursing care for patients through the entire cycle of treatment – from immediately after diagnosis through to post-treatment support. The role includes: • acting as a point of contact and support for men and their families/carers • providing reliable information and education about diagnosis and treatment plan • coordinating care throughout the cancer journey • assisting with access to hospital and community based services during and after treatment • providing information on dealing with the effects of treatment and how to get further help to deal with specific problems being experienced • providing information about support groups
