I am pleased to share that our new Nicholson
Street Specialist Centre is now operational,
providing additional spaces for our doctors to hold
consultations and offer services to their patients
within our existing hospital footprint. In this edition
of GPH News, we feature articles with some of the
specialists whose practices are now based in this
new building.
There is no greater gift than to help someone else
and we are proud of our specialists and staff who
are dedicated to improving the lives of people
within Australia and beyond our shores. This
includes orthopaedic surgeon Dr Mahendra Meta,
who has recently performed surgeries in India, and
urogynaecologists Professor Judith Goh AO, Dr
Hannah Krause AO and Dr Alexandra Mowat who
operated on women in Uganda.
Technology continues to have a life-changing
impact on our patients, including a 93-year-old
woman who underwent major bowel cancer
surgery using a robotic surgical system operated
by Dr Joy Chakraborty.
We have lots of exciting news in the cardiology
space, beginning with the arrival of cryoablation
which uses extreme cold to destroy the heart cells
Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO and Tim Thomas, former commando of the Australian Special Forces,

that cause atrial fibrillation. Greenslopes was also
the largest trial site in Australia for an international
study focusing on high-risk cardiac patients. Our
hypertension unit is halving the testing time for
patients with high blood pressure caused by
primary aldosteronism.
Other articles featured in this edition include a
new neurosurgical spine technique, an initiative to
provide more support for expectant mothers, and
a pilot study to help rehabilitation patients return
home sooner.
Finally, thank you to those who attended our
Anzac Day Dawn Service to reflect on the
sacrifices of our past and present service men and
women. We were honoured to be joined by Dame
Quentin Bryce and Tim Thomas, former commando
of the Australian Special Forces, who spoke about
his mission to revive the Anzac spirit after heading
towards an ambush in Afghanistan. His own battle
with post-traumatic stress disorder led him to want
to help other defence force personnel to transition
back into civilian life.
I hope you enjoy this edition of GPH news. There
are so many great things to celebrate at GPH and
our philosophy of people caring for people is so
evident in every article in this magazine.
Until next time,
Chris
