Cardiology congress
highlights Australian success
A cardiologist recognised as a leader in the prevention of cardiovascular disease
has spoken at the 2018 Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology Congress in Taiwan.
Associate Professor David Colquhoun
from Greenslopes Private Hospital
told the attendees that Australia has
recorded the world’s greatest decline in
deaths from heart attacks and strokes in
the past five decades.
“Since the peak in the death rate
in 1967, there has been a sustained
continual decline in age-adjusted
rates by about 70%,” said
A/Prof Colquhoun.
“There are many reasons for this
including improvements to public health
policy, a significant decrease in the
rate of smoking, and more effective,
affordable and universally available
medical and surgical therapies in both
primary and secondary prevention.”
A/Prof Colquhoun said the
unprecedented ageing population is
presenting new challenges in the field
of cardiovascular disease.

He said it was also
important to explain to the
Asian Pacific Society of
Cardiology Congress the
lessons we have learned in
the past few decades.
“Australia’s neighbours
could benefit by applying
some of our successful
strategies of public health,
private enterprise and
proven therapies.”
A/Prof Colquhoun
has special interests
in lipidology and
angiography; he is also
a board member of the
National Heart Foundation
of Australia (NHFA) and
Co-President of the Clinical
and Preventive Cardiology
Council of the Cardiac
Society of Australia and
New Zealand.
Share the dignity
More than 500 sanitary products were
collected as part of a women’s charity drive
through the Dr David Sharp Plastic Surgery
+ PRAHS Cosmetic Clinic at Greenslopes
Private Hospital.
Staff and visitors to the clinic
donated deodorant, toothpaste,
toothbrushes, tampons and
pads for Australian women
and girls who are experiencing
homelessness, financial
difficulty, or domestic violence.
Practice Director Liz Washington
said, “These donations will
support Share the Dignity, a
wonderful charity that assists
the 85,000 women and girls
in Australia who lack access to
these basic sanitary items.”
Dr David Sharp Plastic Surgery
+ PRAHS Cosmetic Clinic
offers a wide range of surgical
and non-surgical treatments
including reconstructions,
reductions, augmentations,
microsurgery, and dermal fillers.
Share the Dignity is held in
Australia every April and
August, with collection points
around the country.
