In this edition of GPH News, I’m really pleased
to share news with you about our recent
developments at Greenslopes Private Hospital. We
have focused on expanding our facility as part of
our ongoing commitment to provide family friendly
care for our patients.
Our first new purpose-built obstetrics operating
theatre is now operational and available to women
giving birth via caesarean section. Day surgery
patients will also have access to treatments faster,
following the opening of our $7 million upgrade of
the Gastroenterology and Day Procedure Unit.
Research continues to be at the forefront of what
we do and we have some exciting updates in this
space. Our participation in the CRISTAL study is
an area where we hope to grow our knowledge
in clinical practice through research. The study is
comparing the benefits of using aspirin over other
anticoagulants, to help prevent blood clots after
total knee and hip replacements.
It was a pleasure to also welcome Federal Health
Minister Greg Hunt to the hospital and listen to
him speak about new PBS listings in cancer and
haematology treatments. I was proud to hear staff
tell him Greenslopes had been a major trial site for
most of these new medications.
It was also a delight to host a visit from ‘Love Your
Sister’ co-founder and Gold Logie winning actor,
Samuel Johnson OAM. It was heartening to see
the care and love in the room, as patients and
staff came together to hear the story of his sister
Connie and what is in store for cancer treatment in
the future.
As part of our comprehensive cancer care offering,
our Cancer Wellness Program continues to further
enhance the support for patients who receive a
life-changing diagnosis. The program has helped
more than 450 patients in the past 12 months
and is specifically designed to empower them
throughout their cancer journey.
Finally, one of the reasons our veteran mental
health unit continues to support our returned
service men and women so successfully is due to
the dedication of mental health experts such as
Dr John Gibson. The well-regarded psychiatrist
is marking 25 years as the director of our mental
health unit, helping to improve the lives of
thousands of veterans who suffer from PTSD.
I hope you enjoy this edition of GPH News.
