8 | GPH News – February 2019 Have Members of the Right Note Choir work at the hospital's Keith Payne Unit fun in the kitchen and
support cancer care
The Right Note Choir is a group of staff members from the Keith Payne Unit at
Greenslopes Private Hospital. The unit, which is a dedicated mental health facility, cares
for veterans with service related mental illness.
What began as a group of work
colleagues who enjoyed singing and
making music soon evolved into a
fundraising powerhouse.
Clinical nurse Denise O’Dempsey said:
“We joked in the beginning about
making a CD to sell to raise money, not
knowing that we actually would.”
“Once we set the wheels in motion
there was no stopping us. We were
generously offered help by many. We
had 100 CDs made, sold them all and
had another 100 made. It was enough
to make us want to continue using the
Right Note to have fun, de-stress and
raise money for charity.”
Over the past 12 months, the Right Note
focused their efforts on a cause close
to home: launching their very own cook
book to raise funds for the GPH Cancer
Wellness Program, supported by the
Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation
(GMRF).
The Cancer Wellness Program provides
practical support for cancer patients
treated at Greenslopes Private Hospital
and their families. Monthly education
sessions provide patients and carers
with practical help, emotional assistance
and other tools required to optimise
wellbeing and quality of life.
Like the Right Note group itself, In
the Kitchen with The Right Note and
Friends cook book is full of fun and
warmth. A collaborative effort featuring
contributions from the KPU, GPH and
GMRF, the book includes tasty recipes
and heart-warming yarns on fond
memories and the power of good food
in bringing people together.
“This book highlights the importance
of friendship, family and the support of
others. Our singing group is small, but
our support is huge,” Denise said.
The group have sold hundreds of cook
books since the launch in November
last year. You can support cancer care
by purchasing a copy at the reception of
the Cyril Gilbert Cancer Centre (located
near the main foyer) or the Gallipoli
Medical Research Foundation (on the
lower lobby level of the Administration
Building).
