Greenslopes Private Hospital’s Rehabilitation Services provide excellence in multidisciplinary, patient-focused care through the use of a holistic approach.

A range of inpatient therapy is provided in the 45 bed Rehabilitation Unit. Day Therapy Rehabilitation Programs are also available to eligible privately insured and veteran patients. Our aim is to help each patient optimise his or her health and functional independence.

Day Rehabilitation Programs

Our Day Rehabilitation department offers outpatient rehabilitation programs which are specifically designed to meet individual needs. Our philosophy is to maximise independence through goal setting and active participation.

These programs run over four (4) to six (6) weeks with patients attending two (2) days a week, depending on your needs. The programs involve one-on-one individual therapies and exercise groups in a friendly and empowering environment.

The Day Therapy Service offers a Balance Group and a range of functional activities to complement the rehabilitation programs.

The Amputee Day Rehabilitation Program is designed for patients who:

  • are about to undergo or have had an amputation of a limb
  • are having a prosthesis fitted and require training to help them walk
  • need to learn how to transfer safely from a wheelchair
  • need treatment to improve their strength, endurance and balance
  • need to improve their ability to do everyday activities.

Do you have heart disease?

Our Healthy Hearts Cardiac Rehabilitation Program can help. It provides effective programs individually tailored for people who have heart disease, have had a cardiac procedure, have heart failure, or experience risk factors associated with heart disease.

The aim of the program is to help people return to their previous lifestyles and activities through exercise and education.

Healthy Hearts provides an education and exercise program in a safe and monitored environment, and assists you to set and achieve meaningful goals.

How to be referred to the program:

Ask your doctor for a referral to one of the following Healthy Hearts programs:

  • Post Discharge (Phase 2) includes education, supervised exercise and lifestyle activities
  • Maintenance (Phase 3) is a supervised exercise program with regular information sessions

The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) is an intensive and scientifically proven voice program specifically designed for people with voice and speech difficulties arising from Parkinson’s Disease and some stroke patients.

The Neurological Day Rehabilitation Program is designed for patients who:

  • have a neurological medical condition such as Multiple Sclerosis
  • have recently undergone brain surgery or spinal surgery
  • need treatment to improve strength, endurance and balance

  • need to improve their ability to do everyday activities.

Do you need help with walking or everyday activities?

Our Day Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Program can help. It is tailored for patients who:

  • are about to undergo joint replacement surgery
  • have suffered a recent fracture
  • need treatment to improve strength, endurance and balance
  • need to improve the way they walk
  • need to improve their ability to do everyday activities.

Do you have persistent pain?

Our I.M.P.A.C.T. Pain Management Program is a rehabilitation day program to assist you with the Independent Management of Pain through Activity and Cognitive Therapy.

The program aims to help you more effectively manage your chronic pain and assist you in improving your physical and functional capabilities.

We guide you through a graded return to exercise and activities program where you will be supervised at all times to ensure correct movement and posture techniques.

You will also be provided with a comprehensive educational program to reinforce positive self-management strategies to maintain an active and independent lifestyle.

How to be referred to the program:

Ask your doctor for a referral to the I.M.P.A.C.T. Pain Management Program or phone (07) 3394 7727. Your doctor can fax the referral to (07) 3394 7865. Upon completion of the program a progress report is forwarded to your doctor.

Do you have Parkinson’s Disease?

Our Parkinson's Day Rehabilitation Program is designed for patients who:

  • have Parkinson's Disease
  • have eating, drinking and/or speech difficulties
  • need treatment to improve strength, endurance and balance
  • need to improve their ability to do everyday activities

Our Reconditioning Day Rehabilitation Program can help. It is designed for patients who:

  • have recently experienced an acute episode of illness
  • undergone a surgical procedure
  • have a chronic medical condition
  • need treatment to improve strength, endurance and balance
  • need to improve their ability to do everyday activities

Having difficulty breathing?

Our Respiratory Day Rehabilitation Program can help. It is designed for patients who have chronic respiratory illness such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Greenslopes Private Hospital offers a comprehensive Pulmonary/Respiratory Rehabilitation Program designed to help these patients feel better and breathe easier.

Our program can help you increase your ability to do everyday activities including hobbies and leisure activities, improve exercise performance, reduce breathlessness and hospitalisation frequency.

Have you recently had a stroke?

Our Stroke Day Rehabilitation Program can help. It is tailored to individual patient needs post-stroke and may include:

  • help in reading, writing and finding the right words to say
  • treatment to improve strength, endurance and balance
  • improve ability to do everyday activities

Additional Information

  • Medication that you are, or may be, required to take while attending the program
  • Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes
  • Supportive walking shoes
  • Any walking aids that you are currently using
  • Hearing aids and glasses if required
  • On your first visit please bring a list of your medications.

The Rehabilitation Day Therapy Department is open varying hours from Monday to Thursday.

Your Rehabilitation Specialist along with the Rehabilitation Team will determine the structure of your program.

Generally outpatients attend two (2) days a week for six (6) weeks, but this can vary depending on your needs. The funding authorities require that outpatients attend a minimum of two (2) therapies, two (2) days a week, for three (3) hours a day.

To attend a Day Rehabilitation Program, patients require a referral from a GP or specialist to one of Greenslopes Private Hospital's geriatricians and rehabilitation specialists. A Discharge Summary including any follow-up recommendations will be sent to your General Practitioner on the completion of the program.

Transport is organised for entitled veterans; private patients are required to arrange their own transport. For transport enquiries phone (07) 3394 7863.

Rehabilitation Team

Our programs are managed by a team of health care professionals including:

The rehabilitation specialist/geriatrician has the responsibility of monitoring and evaluating your medical and rehabilitation care. The rehabilitation specialist/geriatrician will liaise with your surgeon or physician, general practitioner and other specialists to ensure effective continuity of medical care.
The physiotherapists will assist you in improving your balance, strength, movement, flexibility, endurance, mobility and reviewing any mobility equipment if required. The physiotherapists will design a home exercise program.

Occupational therapists will assist you in increasing your functional ability with activities of daily living. Occupational therapists can also assist you with the prescription of equipment to help you maintain your independence and increase your safety within the home.

Occupational Therapy can assist with:

  • Balance and endurance therapy
  • Falls prevention and everyday activities
  • Leisure activities and past hobbies
  • "getting organised" activities
The allied health assistant coordinates, supervises and assists with individual and group therapy sessions.
If your medical condition has contributed to swallowing and/or communication difficulties you may be referred to a speech pathologist for assessment and management of your swallowing and/or communication function.

If you experience unintentional weight loss or if your medical condition requires diet therapy you may be referred to the dietitian who can assist with:

  • Assessing your nutritional requirements
  • Advise you about healthy food options
  • Provide cooking demonstrations

If you require information about home help/community services, or longer term assistance, you may be referred to a social worker for assessment, planning and referral. The social worker can assist with:

  • Patient planning for every day activity needs on discharge
  • Helping patients and families adjust to issues around disability, loss and lifestyle changes
  • Coordinate appropriate community services
Your nurses will encourage and assist you to achieve your optimal level of independence by providing suitable and enjoyable activities. They will coordinate you program and attend to any nursing requirements.
If you become ill or require prescriptions, discuss this with your GP. The rehabilitation team must be informed about any changes in your medical condition or medication as they may impact on your rehabilitation program.
