An Australian-first workshop has been
held at Greenslopes Private Hospital
to address the growing problem of
liver cancer.
Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation
recently hosted the Hepatocellular
Carcinoma Research Workshop,
bringing together almost 40
international and national clinicians
and researchers.
The experts discussed cutting-edge
HCC research and recent advances
in treatment across topics including
immunotherapy, targeted gene therapy,
microRNA-based therapy, and cancer
stem cells.
Director of Research at the Gallipoli
Medical Research Institute, Professor
Darrell Crawford, said “the national
collaboration is likely to foster a more
coordinated and targeted research plan
across many different areas of liver
cancer research.”
The cohort also committed to
establishing a Liver Cancer Peer
Network in Australia.
It is estimated more than six million
people across the nation are affected by
liver disease, contributing to an annual
cost burden of more than $50 billion.

More than 5,000 babies have been
born at Greenslopes Private Hospital
within five years of its first-class
maternity service opening.
When Patrick Deane arrived on
7 February 2018, he was the
5,000th baby to be delivered at
Greenslopes Maternity.
Obstetrician Dr Melissa McKenzie said
it was an honour to be involved in the
milestone moment.
“It’s a privilege to care for every family
who sees me during their pregnancy
journey and it’s always an incredibly
special time when any baby is born,”
Dr McKenzie said.
“I love being a part of the Greenslopes
Maternity team. It’s a team which offers
the highest standard of care whilst also
keeping the service personalised and
friendly.
“I continue to look forward to caring for
my patients and being there for future
landmarks at Greenslopes!”
26 February 2018 marks the maternity
ward’s fifth birthday.
Greenslopes Private Hospital would
like to thank all the families, doctors,
midwives, nurses, and staff who have
helped to create this premier maternity
service for Queensland patients.
