The Maternity Services Manager at
Greenslopes Private Hospital is taking
an active approach to her position,
successfully completing her Post
Graduate Diploma in Midwifery.
Raechel Frost said she wants to
consolidate her new clinical skills
and knowledge to continue making
Greenslopes Maternity the private
service of choice for parents
in Brisbane.
The 18 month course included 1350
practice hours, 15 assignments, two
exams, three week-long residential
school components, 30 births as the
primary “catcher”, and a rural placement
to Thursday Island.
“Thursday Island was amazing and
makes you realise how much you take
for granted working and living in a
suburban area. Spending time with the

families who allowed me to be part of
their journey was very rewarding.”
She also completed 10 “continuity of
care” journeys, which involves following
a woman through her antenatal, birth,
and postnatal experiences.
Raechel initially arrived at the Maternity
Ward “on loan” from the hospital’s
Coronary Care Unit, where she was
the Nurse Unit Manager. She was
appointed to the maternity role full-time
nine months later.
At first, she said it was challenging to
transition from being a competent and
experienced operator in a critical care
area to not knowing a specialty.
“I decided to complete the Post
Graduate Diploma in Midwifery
because I have never been a very good
hands-off manager. I also wanted to
show the team I was committed to the
department,” said Raechel.
Raechel managed to balance fulltime
work and study including online
lectures, while also achieving at
a high level.
“I love the team we have. There are
amazing staff here and I like how you
never know what the day will bring.”
“The women and partners are just
lovely and to be a part of one of
the most amazing life-changing
experiences is a privilege. I also love
seeing the babies in Special Care
Nursery getting stronger and growing
– and then the exciting time when they
go home.”
“It is also great to see the babies come
back when they become a big brother
or sister!”
