Emergency team on standby for sports injuries
Greenslopes Private Hospital
experienced a rise in the number of
sports injury cases at its Emergency
Centre, coinciding with the start of the
Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Doctors and nurses had been preparing
for a potential increase in presentations
from people trying to emulate their
sports heroes.
“Queenslanders love their sports
and whenever there are competitive
events like the Commonwealth Games,
Olympics, or World Cup series, we tend
to see aspiring athletes imitating their
sporting idols,” Director of Greenslopes
Emergency Centre Dr Mark Baldwin said.

“In the process, some of these
people unfortunately get injured
– whether it be a broken bone from
netball or a concussion from rugby
– and find themselves needing
urgent treatment.”
Greenslopes Private Hospital has
launched a Sports Injury Service to
specifically cater for people who are
hurt while playing for recognised
sporting clubs or schools.
“Staff in our 24/7 Emergency Centre
are on standby to offer immediate
assessments and treatments from our
experienced doctors and nurses,”
Dr Baldwin said.
The Sports Injury Services provides
access to X-ray and pathology services,
and fast-tracked referrals to specialists
if required.
Approximately 18,000 patients present
to Greenslopes Private Hospital’s
emergency department per year.
“While we never want to see people hurt
themselves playing sport, these kinds
of injuries are inevitable. We want them
to know we have the skill, expertise,
and equipment to help these people get
back to their normal routines as quickly
as possible,” Dr Baldwin said.
