Professor Judith Goh AO
has carried the Queen’s
Baton as part of the Gold
Coast Commonwealth
Games – one month after
returning from conducting
life-changing humanitarian
work overseas.
The Greenslopes Private Hospital
urogynaecologist was a baton-bearer
at Surfers Paradise on Day 100 of the
Queen’s Baton Relay – just hours
before the Opening Ceremony.
Prof Goh said, “It was a fantastic
and very humbling experience. The
crowds, entourage, media, police, and
volunteers were all very supportive and
encouraging. It was also great to have
family and friends there, and to see
people of all ages lining the streets.”
In addition to operating at Greenslopes
Private Hospital, Prof Goh regularly
undertakes voluntary medical work
with her colleague, urogynaecologist
Dr Hannah Krause AO. They donate their
time and skills to help underprivileged
women in developing countries.
In March 2018, both Prof Goh and
Dr Krause visited Kagando Hospital in
western Uganda where they performed
surgery for obstetric vesicle-vaginal
fistulas, rectal fistulas, chronic/
unrepaired 4th degree perineal tears,
and pelvic organ prolapse.
On this occasion, they travelled with
four other doctors including fellow
Greenslopes urogynaecologist
Dr Alexandra Mowat.
“We operated on 80 women, and
treated a total of 102 women in two
weeks,” Prof Goh said.
“The women were very happy to
receive treatment. We do fundraising
to pay for the women's hospital costs
(about US$300 per patient). Some
women have had their fistulas for many
years and others have been to other
hospitals/health centres for treatment
but were turned away due to lack of
resources and expertise.”
Greenslopes Private Hospital was proud
to donate spinal anaesthetic drugs,
surgical gloves, and vaginal packs for
the urogynaecologists to use during
their visit.
It was a
fantastic and
very humbling
experience.
