Dr Mahendra Meta is a Queensland-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in adult hip and knee replacement surgery and paediatric orthopaedic surgery, with more than 20 years of international experience in the field of orthopaedic surgery. He has completed sub-specialty training fellowships in both Adult Hip & Knee as well as Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery (undertaken in Australia, New Zealand and India). His unique understanding of hip and knee problems across all age groups makes him versatile in treating these conditions.
Before moving to Australia he had completed his medical degree and orthopaedic specialist training at a leading tertiary care institute in India with academic excellence throughout his educational career. He has worked as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon for many years including positions as Head of Department and A/Prof in Orthopaedics. His international tertiary care institute experience in performing complex joint replacements in very advanced hip and knee arthritis problems combined with Australian experience of using advanced evidence-based techniques & technologies provide the best of both worlds to his patients needing hip or knee replacement.
Dr Meta’s focus is on hip and robotic knee replacement surgery using ERAS (Enhanced Recovery after Surgery) Program. He incorporates the latest technical & technological advances in joint replacement surgery including pre-operative computerized digital 3D templating/planning, robotic knee replacement surgery, computer navigation, “Verasense” sensor assisted surgery and patient-specific instrumentation. This is with the aim to improve accuracy, longevity of joint replacement, patient satisfaction and outcomes. Dr Meta’s team focuses on ‘Personalized Patient Care’ to make the patient’s journey after joint replacement surgery as comfortable and pleasant as possible.
Dr Meta also performs less invasive DAA (Direct Anterior Approach) Hip Replacement Surgery in suitable cases. He has gained valuable insights and modified his surgical technique after he spent some time in Europe with expert anterior approach hip surgeon, Professor Kristoff Corten.
He also has a particular interest in arthroscopic (minimally invasive) knee surgery for sports injuries including “Single Tendon” ACL reconstruction. He enjoys his work as a Specialist Hip and Knee surgeon at QEII Jubilee Hospital. During his sub-specialist fellowship in New Zealand, Dr Meta had an opportunity to learn under the mentorship of Dr Kelly Vince, a well-respected orthopaedic surgeon and a world leader in describing techniques in knee revision surgery.
Dr Meta also treats various lower limb conditions in children and adolescents which includes deformity correction using osteotomies or guided growth, limb lengthening and reconstruction.
During his orthopaedic career in Queensland, Dr Meta has worked at various facilities including Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital, Royal Children Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital, The Prince Charles Hospital, Ipswich Hospital, Townsville Hospital & Rockhampton Base hospital. He is affiliated with The University of Queensland and is involved in the training and education of orthopaedic trainees, junior doctors, and medical students.

He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Orthopaedics and is a member of both the Australian Orthopaedic Association and American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Following his passion for orthopaedics he attained two masters’ degrees in orthopaedics and continues to enhance his orthopaedic knowledge by attending conferences, meetings and workshops both nationally and internationally.
His practice is based on four strong pillars – experience, precision, passion and most importantly, compassion. He strongly believes that “a good surgeon lives within a good human being”. As a surgeon, he has always been thorough and careful in his clinical assessment, surgical planning and implementation.
