Dr Samaratunga graduated with a MBBS from the University of Queensland in 2005 and completed her general physician training at the Royal Brisbane and Womens’ Hospital with external placements including The Prince Charles Hospital, Rockhampton Base Hospital and Redcliffe Hospital. Dr Samaratunga also completed several rural placements in Northern and Central Queensland. Her FRACP was achieved in 2014 which was followed by a 3 year fellowship in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at both the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Prince Charles Hospital.

Dr Samaratunga has received training in complex areas of sleep medicine including management of respiratory muscle weakness in neuromuscular disorders such as motor neurone disease, acute and domiciliary noninvasive ventilation and disorders of hypersomnolence such as narcolepsy. She is also proficient in managing obstructive sleep apnoea and the occasional complexities with treatment. Dr Samaratunga is currently chair of the Sleep Health Innovation Work-Group Metro North Hospitals.

Dr Samaratunga also has experience in managing a wide range of respiratory illnesses ranging from COPD and asthma to lung cancer to more complex interstitial lung diseases. She has developed skills in pleural intervention, ultrasound and bronchoscopy through accredited training and expertise.

Dr Samaratunga is a lecturer at the University of Queensland and has presented at national meetings through the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and Australasian Sleep Association on both sleep and respiratory issues and is a member of both societies.

She is currently practising as a Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Physician at Greenslopes Private Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital. Dr Samaratunga refers to the Sleepcare study centres for private sleep studies.
