20 Years of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Dec 17, 2018

More than 5,700 cardiothoracic operations have been performed at Greenslopes Private Hospital over the past 20 years.

The majority of these procedures have involved open heart surgery with patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery or corrective surgery on the aortic and mitral valve.

Patients who have received such treatment have ranged in age from 23-years to 88-years of age, with an average age of 69-years.

A group of highly skilled Cardiothoracic Surgeons at Greenslopes Private Hospital perform these procedures using the latest technology and prostheses. Chair of Cardiology, Dr Paul Watson, said Greenslopes Private Hospital offers a one-stop service treating a wide variety of both simple and complex cardiac conditions. This extensive array of services is available to patients at the facility which is located on Brisbane’s south side.

“The hospital provides a comprehensive range of both diagnostic and treatment options for a variety of cardiac conditions. A range of highly accurate diagnostic cardiac services exists to facilitate the accurate diagnosis of these cardiac conditions,” Dr Watson said.

“Our highly skilled Cardiothoracic Surgeons and Invasive and Non-Invasive Cardiologists are subsequently able to treat coronary artery disease, cardiac valvular pathology and electrophysiological problems arising in the heart.”

The Greenslopes Emergency Centre is open 24-hours a day, seven days a week, and provides direct access to not only the Coronary Care Unit and Cardiovascular Suites, but direct access to treatment for acute life threatening cardiac emergencies including heart attacks, cardiac arrhythmias requiring pacemaker implantation or defibrillation.

The hospital’s 29-bed Coronary Care Unit is one of the largest units in Australia and provides a private and comfortable environment for patients to be attended to and cared for by our extensive range of highly specialised doctors and nurses.
