A personal story about Special Care
Jun 16, 2015
While Greenslopes Maternity has been growing since opening in early 2013 so too has the reputation of our Special Care Nursery (SCN). With close to 2000 babies having been delivered at Brisbane’s newest maternity service there has been some babies that arrived early or been unwell and required a stay in our Special Care Nursery where they can receive the extra care that they need.
The Special Care Nursery at Greenslopes Private Hospital is a Level 2 nursery that is able to provide specialised care for babies born from 32 weeks. Experienced midwives and neonatal nurses staff the unit 24 hours a day and are supported by a team of experienced paediatricians and neonatologists. They have an on call roster 24 hours a day, 7 days a week offering parents the reassurance of the best quality expert care.
The Special Care Nursery is an intimate environment within the Greenslopes Maternity Ward ensuring a truly personalised experience for parents and babies.
First time Mum, Anna Murphy gave birth to Fraser at Greenslopes Private Hospital at just 34 weeks and recently shared her thoughts about the time that Fraser spent in our Special Care Nursery at Greenslopes.
“Our experience with Greenslopes maternity was first class. Having a premature baby can be a very emotional and stressful experience, but the kindness and attention given to us made the whole experience one that was really beautiful and special instead,” Anna said.
“I originally had my reservations about having a baby in a centre that did not have a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), but the SCN experience at Greenslopes was incredible - exceptionally capable, friendly and attentive staff who went above and beyond my expectations, to ensure my baby had the very best care possible. He thrived in the SCN and I was given so much one on one attention from the doctors, nurses, midwives and lactation consultants, that I felt very confident with my baby as a first time mother.”
“The rooming in process also helped to further develop my confidence and to ensure my baby was ready for discharge. As a doctor, I've worked in a lot of hospitals and have never before seen a unit as exceptional as the Greenslopes Maternity Unit. Every staff member we met - obstetricians, paediatricians, nurses, midwives, allied health, administration, catering and cleaning staff - was absolutely delightful and exceptionally kind. We will be back for baby number 2!”
Anna’s husband Scott has been involved throughout the entire journey and said that the staff made a stressful time such a beautiful experience for both him and Anna.
“Not only was Fraser our first baby but he arrived six weeks early,” Scott said. “I remember being so overwhelmed I couldn't hardly speak, nothing prepares you for an experience such as that!”
“What made this special time even more so was the attentiveness of every staff member. Every staff member was not only professional and very adept in their roles but they all showed a genuine kindness and joy for us. They were like a big happy family, the way they spoke with each other, it was so impressive, especially working in such a high intensity environment.”
