PAWS Dog Therapy Program extends vital veteran support to all at Greenslopes Private Hospital

Apr 22, 2026

Ramsay Health Care’s Greenslopes Private Hospital is proud to announce the expansion of the highly successful Puppies Assisting Wounded Soldiers (PAWS) Therapy Program, established by war veteran Tony Wilson.

Initially launched by Mr Wilson to provide vital therapeutic support for fellow veterans at Greenslopes Private Hospital, the program's remarkable positive impact has led to its hospital-wide extension, now offering the joy and comfort of therapy dogs Dougal and Buddy to all patients and staff.

Having served in Iraq and Afghanistan, Tony established PAWS in 2025 as Queensland’s only dog therapy program designed specifically to support veterans and operated with the support of dedicated volunteers.

"Following my service, I saw a fellow veteran that was deeply affected by their experience, and it motivated me to find a way to make a positive difference in their lives,” Mr Wilson said.

"Seeing the positive impact Dougal and Buddy have had, especially within the veteran community, has been incredibly rewarding. I'm so pleased this program can now extend to benefit everyone at the hospital."

Greenslopes Private Hospital CEO, Justin Greenwell, said the success of the initiative was quickly recognised, leading to the hospital wide expansion of the PAWS Program.

"Dougal and Buddy are now a familiar and cherished sight, offering moments of distraction, reducing stress and fostering a more positive and caring environment for all,” Mr Greenwell said.

Their presence is a wonderful addition to Greenslopes Private Hospital, benefiting not only our patients but also our dedicated staff who work tirelessly every day."

Greenslopes Private Hospital holds a special connection to the military community, having opened in 1942 and served as a crucial military facility during World War II and repatriation hospital for veterans. Now a private hospital owned by Ramsay Health Care, the hospital continues the tradition of providing a special quality of care and attention for Australian veterans and their widows.
