PET/CT scanner improves patient access

Dec 16, 2018

The location of a PET/CT scanner on site at Greenslopes Private Hospital is helping to make life easier for patients with cancer and other illnesses.

Queensland X-Ray celebrated the one-year anniversary of the arrival of the machine in late September.

Over the past year more than 2400 scans have been conducted, 99 per cent of which were for oncology patients.

Queensland X-Ray PET/CT service coordinator John Barlow said having it on site had greatly improved patients’ access to services.

“It’s made it easier for inpatients in particular to have their scan here at Greenslopes Private Hospital rather than needing to be transferred, usually by ambulance,” he said.

“Even the outpatients, they come to the hospital to see their specialist doctor.”

The Siemens Biograph mCT Flow 64 was the first of its kind to be installed in a southeast Queensland private hospital.

The technology is based on a single continuous motion, rather than stop and- go technology, which reduces the imaging time for patients.
