Queensland X-Ray Greenslopes leading the way in prostate cancer services

Prostate cancer diagnostic services are growing from strength to strength at Queensland X-Ray (QXR) Greenslopes with the provision of a highly specialised prostate biopsy service using 3T MRI.

MRI can be used to identify high-risk prostate gland malignancies with directed biopsy under MRI-guidance for pathological sampling. At QXR Greenslopes, the ‘Dynatrim’ biopsy system is used and in the last 12 months more than 200 patients have had their biopsy performed under MRI guidance using this method.

The biopsies are performed by the treating Urologist with MRI guidance supervised by an experienced QXR Radiologist. QXR’s team of skilled Radiologists has more than 10 years’ experience performing and reading prostate MRI.

“By working together with the treating Urologist to provide sub-specialty MRI and biopsy, as well as PSMA (Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen) PET/CT, QXR is able to deliver a continuum of care to both private and public patients which is unrivalled in Queensland.” QXR Radiologist, Dr Matthew Bastian-Jordan said.

Senior Urologist, Dr Peter Heathcote believes that the collaborative approach enables more precise diagnosis and management of prostate cancer and in some cases with less biopsies and facilitating less invasive treatment.

Both Dr Bastian-Jordan and Dr Heathcote have recently presented at national and state conferences together where their primary focus was on Prostate MRI, biopsy and robotic prostate surgery. Results from a recent study performed in conjunction with QXR, Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation, Prostate Cancer Research Australia and Princess Alexandra Hospital were presented.

While there is currently no Medicare rebate for prostate MRI, QXR offers an affordable and accessible private fee.
